LADY BEARS FALL AT THE HANDS OF NO. 3 VIRGINIA UNION, 91-64

RALEIGH, NC – Junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) scored a team-best 21 points but the Shaw University women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Virginia Union University, 91-67 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division contest Thursday evening in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

 

Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) added 10 points and three rebounds while junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and Taylor tallied six boards for Shaw.

 

VUU played a pressing style of defense the majority of the contest, causing many turnovers and scoring fast-break baskets off of the Lady Bears miscues. The Lady Panthers opened up the contest with a 6-2 lead before two baskets from Taylor tied the game at 6-6 at the 6:55 mark.

 

The Lady Bears (3-12, 0-3 CIAA) would trail by 10 points with under five minutes left in the first quarter before Shaw trimmed at the deficit and was able to cut the Lady Bears lead to five points (20-15) heading in the second quarter. The Lady Panthers (11-0, 2-0 CIAA) outscored Shaw 22-12 in the second frame to lead 42-27 at halftime.

 

Shaw accounted for 15 turnovers in the first half and shot 8-for-24 from the field for 33.3 percent. The Lady Panthers shot 45.2 percent from the field in the first half (19-of-42) and made four out of 10 three-point attempts. Taylor led Shaw in scoring with nine points while Lady Walker led VUU with 18 first half points.

 

Despite a competitive third quarter from the Lady Bears, VUU would put ballgame out of reach in the fourth quarter, building their lead to 25 points at 76-51 with 6:36 remaining in the contest. The closest the Shaw trimmed the deficit from then on was 15 points, at 78-63 with 3:29 left in the game. The Lady Panthers proceeded to score the game's final eight points for the 91-64 win.

 

Walker led the Lady Panthers with 27 points and 14 rebounds while Rachael Pecota chipped in 16 points and Jayda Luckie tallied 15 points.

 

Due to pending inclement weather this weekend, Shaw's matchup against Bowie State University originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 7 has been postponed and rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. The Lady Bears will return to action on Monday, Jan. 9 versus Lincoln (Pa.) in Spaulding for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
