RALEIGH, NC – Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) scored 11 of her 17 points during the first half but the Shaw University women's basketball team lost 83-67 to Spring Hill College Thursday for a non-conference contest inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The loss slips the Lady Bears to 2-9 overall while the Badgers improve to 4-3 on the year.
Joining Heggins in double-digit scoring was freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) who netted 15 points and two assists, followed by junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) with a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior Falecia Cabral (Pawcatock, CT) with 12 points and four rebounds.
The Lady Bears shot 50 percent (21-42) from the floor, including 54.5 percent (6-11) from the 3-point line and 76 percent (19-25) from the charity stripe. The Badgers connected 31-for-58 (53-percent) from the field and a scorching 68-percent (15-22) from behind the arc and netted 6-for-9 (67-percent) from the foul line.
Trailing 43-30 at the half, the Badgers opened up the third quarter on a 10-3 run highlighted by two 3-pointers from Jennifer Clark that would put SHC up 53-33 at the 7:02 mark. Shaw would score the next ten points to cut the deficit back to a 13-point lead (53-40) before the Badgers held an 8-7 scoring advantage to close out the quarter with a 14-point lead.
After the Lady Bears grew an 11-9 spurt over the Badgers in the fourth quarter, the Badgers would build its lead back up to 20 points (83-63) after grooming a 13-5 run with 2:08 remaining which would prove to be too much for Shaw in the end.
Elise Reilly led the charge for SHC with 22 points and five assists while Jennifer Clark and Jewel Hill scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Johnta Hughes recorded a game-high 10 assists.
For the contest, Shaw was outrebounded (33-22) and outscored by the Badgers 15-6 in second chances and 49-8 in bench points. SHC scored 31 points off the Lady Bears turnovers compared to Shaw who scored 24 points off the Badgers miscues.
The Lady Bears will return to action Sunday, Dec. 18 when they compete in the Palm Beach Atlantic Holiday Hoops Classic hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic. Shaw will face the Sailfish at 3 p.m. on Sunday, followed by a 12:30 p.m. tip versus Florida Tech Monday.
