RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's basketball team suffered an 82-80 loss to Paine College in front of 926 Shaw fans on Tuesday night in its home opener. The loss dropped the Lady Bears to 1-2 on the season, while the Lady Lions improve to 1-0 on the year.
Freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) led the Lady Bears in scoring with 20 points and five rebounds. Falecia Cabral (Pawcatock, CT) chipped in 14 points and four rebounds, while junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) recorded her third double-double of the year 13 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Junior Brianna Washington (Woodbridge, VA) would round out the double figure scoring for Shaw with 11 points and six rebounds.
The contest featured 11 ties and nine lead changes. Shaw outrebounded the Lady Lions 49-45 and went to the free-throw line 16 times more than Paine but the Lady Bears shot 34.4 percent (22-64) from the field compared to Paine's 44.0 percent (33-75).
A layup by junior Julia Cordova (Phoenix, AZ) put the Lady Bears on the score board first as Shaw would build a 5-1 lead in the opening minutes of the contest. Shaw led by as many seven points before the Lady Lions tied the game at 15-15 with 2:55 showing on the clock.
Paine took its first lead off a layup from Aalyhia Wright but two free-throw's from Cabral gave Shaw the lead again before the Lady Lions scored four-straight points to lead 23-18 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Lions went on a 9-2 run to start the second quarter, extending its lead to 12 points at the 7:51 mark. A bucket by Washington led to a 6-0 for Shaw midway through the quarter. The Lady Bears got within three points after a three-pointer from Cabral but Paine responded with a three-ball of its own with 2:02 left. Shaw would score five unanswered points to close out the first half but the Lady Bears trailed 44-41 at the break.
After trailing by 10 points in the third quarter, Shaw went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two points but a basket from Janisha Wilkerson snapped the Lady Bears run and led to a 6-0 run for Paine. The Lady Lions maintained the lead to close out the quarter 66-62.
Shaw outscored Paine 6-2 to tie the ball game at 68-68 in the fourth quarter. The contest would be tied seven times until a free-throw shot from Tierra Boykin gave Paine a one point lead (81-80) with 15 seconds left. Shaw had an opportunity to win the game but a missed jumper led to a Lady Lions rebound which resulted in Paine going to the line as Wright was able to sink one-of-two free-throws to close out the game.
Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 23 when they host USC Aiken for a non-conference tilt in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 11 a.m.
