SHEPHERDSTOWN, W Va. – The Shaw University women's basketball team earned its first win on the season with a 83-79 victory over Shepherd University Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Conference Challenge inside Butcher Center.
The victory improves Shaw to 1-1 on the young season while Shepherd also has a 1-1 record on the year.
Junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) led the Lady Bears with 15 points and 16 rebounds while junior Falecia Cabral (Pawcatock, FL) and freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) also netted 15 points apiece. Junior Chelsea Long (Rockledge, FL) rounded out the Lady Bears double-figure scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The contest featured eight ties and nine lead changes as the Lady Bears held a 45-37 edge on the boards and a 39-19 ratio in bench points.
Shaw connected on 50 percent (31-62) from the field with a 33.3 percent (6-18) night from behind the arc. The Lady Bears also hit on 75 percent (15-20) of their free throws. Shepherd shot 40.5 percent (32-79) from the floor with a 36.4 percent effort (8-22) from three-point range for the game, in addition to its 58.3 percent (7-12) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Bears return to action Tuesday, Nov. 15 for its home opener versus Paine at 6 p.m.
