MELBOURNE, FLORIDA - The Shaw University women's basketball team fell to Florida Tech Saturday afternoon by a score of 95-75, during the second day of the FIT CarMax Holiday Tournament. The Lady Bears ended their nonconference portion 7-5 on the season.
Verdine Warner led the Lady Bears effort with 27 points and 19 rebounds. While Micah Brooks contributed 12 points, three assist and one steal in the Lady Bears loss. Markela Snipes added nine points and Fanstasha Tyson chipped in seven points for Shaw.
Florida Tech's Kayk Wilson led all scorers with 31 points. Jasmire Brown tallied 21 pointed and Shequana Harris scored 14 points in the Panthers' win.
The Panthers dominated the game from the start with a quick 25-3 lead and maintained a double digit advantage during the first half of play. The Panthers outscored the Lady Bears 54-23 heading into halftime.
Shaw would show signs of life going into the second half of play. The Lady Bears began clawing away at the 34-point deficit when Snipes hit a three pointer at the 19:29 mark. Shaw would outscore the Panthers 52-41 but that would still not be enough to defeat Florida Tech.
The Lady Bears scored 38 points in the paint and 21 points off of Florida Tech turnovers.
Shaw returns to action New Year's day when they travel to Elizabeth City State University. The CIAA crossover contest tips-off at 5:30pm on January 1, 2015.
