Kyria Buford Named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year
[Hampton, VA] - Shaw's Kyria Buford has been named CIAA Defensive Player of the Year by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced today. Buford joins teammates Sequoyah Griffin and Aslea Williams on the All-CIAA squad.
Buford, a senior forward from Charlotte, NC, is the only player in the conference with 150 defensive rebounds, 45 steals and 45 blocks. She is fourth in the conference with 9.3 rebounds per game. She averaged 13.1 points per game. On Monday, Buford collected her 500th rebound at Shaw.
Griffin, a junior guard from Columbus, GA, averages 10 points per game, and has dished out 55 assists on the season. She's 14th in the conference with a 41.9 field goal shooting percentage.
Williams, a senior center from Akron, OH, is fourth in the conference in total rebounds with 223 rebounds (8.9 per game) and sixth in the conference in scoring with 362 points (14.5 per game). She has shot 44.4 percent from the floor, good for fifth in the CIAA.
The Lady Bears will be honored as part of the CIAA Men's and Women's Tip-Off Awards Luncheon, scheduled for Monday, February 27 at the Charlotte Convention Center. The media are welcome to attend this invitation-only celebration.
Shaw, 19-6 on the season, has a 14-1 record in the conference, 8-1 in the CIAA's Southern Division.
The Lady Bears close out the regular season on Thursday when they travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's where Buford will face CIAA Player of the Year Keyona Bryant. Tip is at 5:30.
