Lady Bears Win Tenth Straight With Victory Over Fayetteville State
[Raleigh, NC] - Aslea Williams scored 21 points and pulled in eight rebounds to help power Shaw past Fayetteville State 79-51 Monday night in a game played at Shaw's C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The win is Shaw's tenth straight and improves their record to 14-5, 9-0 in the CIAA and 3-0 in the Southern Division. Fayetteville State drops to 7-10, 1-7, and 0-3.
The Lady Bears got some of their offensive punch at the free throw line, where they went 26 for 38.
"Fayetteville State played a very aggressive style of defense," said Shaw assistant head coach Ashante Timoll. "We were coming strong to the ball and they were on us. They take their chances on making the steal and we would get fouled."
Shaw came out in the first half cold, but still managed to build a nine-point lead that held through the first 14 minutes of the first. Then Kyria Buford hit three straight threes, building the lead to 16.
"Everyone has the opportunity to shoot the ball," said Timoll. "We're not going through an entire game without hitting our shots. What catapulted us in this game was Kyria hitting those three shots in a row."
After Buford put on her offensive display, Shemieka Brown added two buckets to extend the lead to 20 with 3:58 left in the first.
Much of the Shaw success came in holding Fayetteville State's Akysia Resper to only eight points on the evening. While she got off 13 shots, she only made four.
"Our goal was to keep number 15 (Resper) from getting too many touches," said Timoll. "She put up 13, but we kept her from getting strong looks so she didn't get off many good shots."
With 2:34 left in the game, Aslea Williams hit a jumper that pushed the Shaw lead over 30 at 76-45. The Lady Bears held a 30-point lead until, with 11 seconds left, Resper hit a jumper to make the final score 79-51.
Williams' 21 led both teams in scoring. Buford scored 15 and fell one rebound short of the double-double with nine boards. Sequoyah Griffin added 14 points and Brittany Ransom had 11. Allyssa Lane had three assists to lead Shaw.
Bria Robinson had 12 points to lead Fayetteville State. DeQuon Cuthbertson led FSU with eight rebounds and Tashama Banner had three assists.
The Lady Bears return to action Saturday night when they travel to Charlotte to take on Johnson C. Smith for a 5:30 tip. They do not return home until Monday, February 13 when they host JCSU in the annual Pink Zone Game. Tip for that contest is at 6:00 p.m. at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
