Shaw Holds Off Charging West Texas A&M 69-63
[Canyon, TX] - Shaw held off a late-game charge from host West Texas A&M and held on for a 69-63 win at the West Texas Golf Cars Lady Buffs Holiday Classic. The win for Shaw snaps West Texas A&M's seven-game winning streak.
The Lady Bears (4-4) held a nine-point lead with six minutes left in the game, but the Lady Buffs (7-4) fought back, taking a lead with just over a minute left in the game. Kyria Buford answered with a three - recapturing the lead and forcing WTAM to foul in order to stop the clock.
Shaw controlled the inside game, scoring 32 points in the paint to only 20 for the Lady Buffs, and outrebounded West Texas 46-32.
Shaw broke on top early, opening up a 7-2 lead, but - as they would all night - West Texas fought back, tying the game a nine on a three-pointer from Lacee Logan.
After the Lady Buffs took a 12-11 lead, the Lady Bears scored eight unanswered - six from Aslea Williams - to build a seven-point lead. The Lady Buffs answered with a 7-0 run of their own to again tie the score.
The two teams battled evenly the rest of the half, going into the locker rooms at the half with a 30-30 tie.
West Texas scored the first four points of the second half and eventually built a five-point, 38-33, lead. But the Lady Bears answered with a five-point run of their own to again tie the score.
The Lady Bears slowly built a lead, and with 10:54 left in the game, Buford hit a three that gave the Lady Bears a five-point, 49-44 lead. With only 6:21 left on the clock, Sequoyah Griffin took the outlet pass from Buford and hit the fast break layup to give the Lady Bears a 60-51 lead.
The Lady Buffs then reeled off ten unanswered points, taking a lead by one with 2:32 left in the game when Casey Land sunk a three.
Down one with 47 seconds to play, Buford hit another three to reclaim the lead for the Lady Bears. After Shaw forced a turnover, West Texas decided to foul to stop the clock. In the closing seconds of the game, the Lady Bears were four of four from the line, and the Lady Buff three-point attempts fell short of the mark, giving Shaw the 69-63 final tally.
Buford led the Lady Bears with 19 points and she also pulled in six rebounds. Williams finished the game with 13 and Griffin had 12. Victoria Tanner led the Lady Bears with nine rebounds. Alyssa Lane led the Lady Bears with eight assists and, at 4'11", collected six rebounds.
Four Lady Buffs scored in double figures. Joni Unruh led West Texas with 18 points, while Kenisha Harris had 13 and Logan and Devin Griffin had 11 apiece. Unruh pulled in seven rebounds to pace WTAM and Casey Land and Ashley Leven had four assists each.
The Lady Bears finish their western road trip on Sunday when they travel to Division I New Mexico State. Game time is 5:00 p.m. eastern. Shaw returns home on January 7 when they take on Virginia State in a 2:00 p.m. tip. That afternoon is "Take a Kid to the Game" and children are admitted free with a paid adult admission.
