(Raleigh, NC) – A hot hand, four players in double figures and 19 points off turnovers led Shaw over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's 92-79 in a packed and raucous gym on Saint Augustine's campus.
Shaw (12-7, 5-3 CIAA) hit over 40 percent from the three-point line, and nearly 50 percent overall, while Saint Augustine's (11-6, 5-2 CIAA) hit only one-third of their shots and committed 18 turnovers. The 92 points were the most the Lady Falcons had allowed this season, and tied for the most the Lady Bears had scored.
The Lady Falcons did outrebound Shaw 59-46, including 23 offensive rebounds, and did collect 19 second-chance points.
The game was a barn-burner throughout the first half, with neither team managing more than a four-point lead until 1:33 remained in the period and Jackie Sanders hit a three pointer to give the Lady Bears a 37-31 lead. Seconds later, on the fastbreak, teammate Alyssa Lane hit a layup to extend the lead to eight.
Brittany Torian hit a three for the Lady Falcons, and Kyria Buford hit one of two free throws for Shaw to close out the half with the 40-34 lead.
The Lady Bears opened the second half on a 15-7 run. With 16:09 left, Buford hit a three to give the Lady Bears a 55-41 lead. The Lady Falcons battled back over the next three and a half minutes. With 12:47 left in the half, Crystal McCaffity hit a layup for the Lady Falcons, was fouled and hit the free throw for the old-fashioned three pointer to cut the Shaw lead to six, 57-51.
Shaw stretched the lead to 17 on a 20-9 scoring run over the next four minutes, punctuated by Aslea Williams's old-fashioned three with 6:25 left in the game.
Saint Augustine's would make a number of short runs on the lead, but cut never cut it to fewer than eight points, which they did twice, the last with only 29 seconds left on the clock. In the next 16 seconds, the Lady Bears would score five points, all on free throws, to put the final score at 92-79.
Le'Kiesha White had a double-double, leading the Lady Falcons with 19 points and 20 assists. McCaffity finished with 17 points. Umeka Benson had a second double-double for the Lady Falcons with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Bears are off until next Saturday, January 29, when they travel to Salisbury, NC to take on Livingstone. Tip is 5:30 p.m.
