SALEM, Va. – Shaw University softball's 2018 season comes to an end as the Lady Bears fell 16-3 to Fayetteville State University (14-24) during game two in the consolation round, day two of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tuesday afternoon at Moyer Park.
The setback concluded the Lady Bears 2018 campaign with an overall record of 12-20, the most wins under the leadership of head coach DiShondra Goree. Additionally, this season also embarked the most wins for the program since 2013 season.
Shaw played fairly well and committed only two turnovers but the Lady Bears were outhit 15-5 for the game which ultimately cost SU the contest.
After one complete inning, both teams had one run apiece but the Lady Bears went scoreless in the top of the second as the Lady Broncos managed to produce six runs on four hits to go ahead 7-1 over Shaw after two innings.
Shaw scored two runs on a throwing error from FSU that pulled the Lady Bears within four (7-3) in the top of the third. FSU capped off the third inning, with a game-high eight runs on seven hits to stretch its lead 15-3 over SU after three complete.
FSU added one more run in the bottom of the fourth on a single which secured the win and five inning rule for the Lady Broncos over Shaw.
The Lady Bears tallied six hits for the contest as senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) and senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) went 1-for-2. Perry finished with SU's only RBI. She also suffered the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs and walking two.
Shaw had seven seniors that included Perry, Kline, Julia Slade (Greensboro, NC), Erica Kiessling (Fuquay-Varina, NC), Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA), Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) and Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA).
