RALEIGH, N.C.- Looking to improve upon last season's record, the Shaw University women's softball team will open their 2018 campaign at Benedict College on Friday, Feb. 9 in Columbia, SC for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
Live stats and video will be available online at www.shawbears.com.
Shaw finished last year's season 6-29 overall and 4-11 in CIAA conference. The Lady Bears went 0-11 on the road and would look to get off to a good start at Benedict on Friday. Shaw returns 12 players from a season ago including All-CIAA Rookie recipient sophomore Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL).
The Lady Bears are led by DiShondra Goree in her fourth season at the helm.
Benedict was 26-24 overall, including a 13-9 mark at home during their 2017 campaign. The Lady Tigers were crowned statistical champions in runs scored per game and stolen bases per game by the NCAA. Most recently, the Lady Tigers had three players named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Preseason Team in Sharik Woods, Brianna Bille, and Erica Dargan.
The Lady Tigers are led by interim head coach Loraine Dunbar.
These two teams met last season with Benedict sweeping Shaw in a doubleheader by the score of 12-1 and 6-2 on Feb. 6.
