WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Shaw University softball's 2017 season came to an end Thursday afternoon when the Lady Bears paid a visit to Winston-Salem State for a key division doubleheader. Shaw suffered an 8-0 decision in game one and 11-0 defeat in the nightcap. The setbacks would end hopes for Shaw competing in the CIAA Softball Tournament next week.
The Lady Bears were outhit 10-1 during game one and 9-3 in the second game. In the opener, Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) was 1-for-2 at the plate for the Lady Bears lone hit. WSSU took a 3-0 lead after two complete innings before planting five in the bottom of the third to secure the game in five innings with an 8-0 win.
Three Lady Bears tallied one hit in the second game, including Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA) whom was 1-for-1 at the plate. Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) and Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) both finished 1-for-2 but Shaw struggled to find its offensive groove when it mattered the most.
Shaw trailed 4-0 in the second as the Rams quickly ballooned to a 11-0 lead after scoring seven runs in the third which would leave no chance for a Lady Bears comeback.
The loss concluded the regular season for Shaw with a 6-29 overall record and 4-11 mark against conference opponents while WSSU will hold on to its fourth place position within the Southern Division with a 13-29 record and 9-6 mark in the CIAA.
