FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Shaw University softball team's Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament hunt was snipped by Fayetteville State University on Saturday afternoon at Seabrook Park. The Lady Bears suffered two losses by the hands of the Lady Broncos, 8-0 in both games.
The losses drop the Lady Bears to 6-27 overall and 4-9 in the league while FSU improves to 17-15, 10-2 in CIAA action. Shaw currently stands in fifth place within the division with a 2-6 record while FSU has a 6-1 mark for second place.
For the contest, Shaw recorded just four hits total in both games combined and accounted six errors.
In game one, Shaw tallied two hits compared to the Lady Broncos eight. FSU led 2-0 in the first inning before Shaw gave up six crucial runs in the bottom of the sixth that would prove to be too much for a comeback for the Lady Bears.
Shaw trailed 2-0 early after two innings of play in game two but things would get out of hand for the Lady Bears as they allowed the Lady Broncos to plate five runs in the bottom of the third which extend their deficit to 7-0 heading into the fourth inning. Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) doubled to centerfield but that would be the only highlight of that inning as FSU quickly got two outs to hold the Lady Bears offensively.
FSU added one more run in the fifth to secure the 8-0 win over Shaw in five innings, as Shaw's Masnica and Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
Shaw will look to bounce back on Sunday, April 23 at Winston-Salem State for a CIAA Southern Division doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
