RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team dropped two pair of games to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University on Saturday afternoon at the Lions Park. The Lady Bears suffered a 12-0 loss in the day's first game before coming up short in the nightcap by the score of 6-3.

With the loss, Shaw (6-25, 4-6 CIAA) stands 2-4 in the Southern Division while SAU (12-9, 7-1 CIAA) stands in first place with a 5-0 against division opponents on the year.

In the first game, Shaw found themselves trailing by four at the conclusion of the second inning. SAU scored the game's first score on a sacrifice fly from Marley Parker that allowed Jasmine Rios to score in the first inning. The Lady Falcons scored three runs in the second led by a single from Tamiera Sanchez that led to SAU scoring two. Two of the Lady Falcons runs were unearned in that inning.

Plagued by errors, Shaw missed opportunities to pull within reach as the Lady Bears tallied just one hit during the game. SAU would go on to plate eight runs in the third inning to put the game way. Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) recorded the loss on the mound, she allowed 12 runs, 12 hits, walked one and struck out none.

With a chance to redeem themselves, the Lady Bears hung tight with SAU in game two despite falling behind 2-0 in the first inning. The Lady Falcons recorded two runs sparked by a single from Parker, following another single from Makayla August.

Shaw scored on a single from Tyler Ford (Durham, NC) in the top of the third but SAU registered three runs in the fourth. The Lady Bears cut the deficit to three (5-3) after Ford scored on a Lady Falcon miscue; however, the Lady Bears mini run would not be enough as SAU added one more in the sixth to secure the win.

Ortiz led the Lady Bears offensively, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and one RBI. Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) took the loss in the circle, allowing 13 hits, six runs, no walks or strikeouts.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday, April 11 at St. Andrews for a non-conference twinbill at 1 p.m.
