PETERSBURG, Va. – Despite a double and RBI from Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) in game two, the Shaw University softball team was unable to snap its losing streak as the Lady Bears lost a pair of games to both Chowan and Virginia State Wednesday afternoon at the VSU Softball Field.
Shenqiua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) and Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) tallied one hit apiece and Negeve scored one run in the 7-4 loss to VSU (6-16, 2-4 CIAA) but the Lady Bears would not score nor earn a hit against the Hawks (22-16, 5-1 CIAA), falling 8-0 in five innings.
The Hawks scored three runs in the top of the third on RBI double from Danielle Baccus and then added five more runs in the top of the fifth, including one run unearned and three miscues by Shaw to close out the game in five.
Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) picked up the loss for the Lady Bears, allowing five hits and three runs, in four innings of work. She walked three and struck out three.
Shaw trailed 1-0 to the Trojans going into the third inning but the Lady Bears managed to score one run on a double from Masnica which scored Ortiz. In the bottom of that inning, VSU scored twice, including one unearned to stretch its lead 3-1 over Shaw in that inning.
The Lady Bears plated a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth but it would not hold up against the Trojans as VSU plated two in the bottom of the fourth and one run in both the fifth and sixth to secure the win. Fahie pitched three innings of work, allowing seven hits, three runs while walking just one.
Shaw will return home to host a four-game skid versus division opponents with Livingstone on Saturday, Apr. 1 and Johnson C. Smith on Sunday, Apr. 2. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. In addition, the Lady Bears will honor two seniors on Sunday for Senior Day in between games.
