CHARLOTTE, NC – The Shaw University softball team went 2-0 on the first day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Round-Up Friday afternoon at Nevin Community Park. The Lady Bears defeated Lincoln (Pa.) 14-2 in five innings before downing Elizabeth City State, 7-2.
Against the Lady Lions, the Lady Bears were powered by sophomore Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) who was 3-for-3 at the plate, including a team-best five RBI's, one double and home run and two runs scored.
Shaw (4-17, 2-0 CIAA) took a 6-2 lead after one complete inning. The Lady Bears would go on to score four runs in the top of the third, three in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth. SU's defense held LU (1-6, 0-1 CIAA) scoreless for the remainder of the contest as the Lady Bears accounted for a season-high 14 hits total.
Junior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) earned the win on the mound, allowing three hits, two runs and striking out four in three innings of work.
Similar to the day's first game, Shaw scored six runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 lead over the Lady Vikings (1-14, 0-2 CIAA) sparked by a double from freshman Bailey Nixon (Denison, TX) who recorded three RBI's during that inning. In the top of the third, ECSU cut the deficit by scoring two runs but the Lady Bears would not relinquish the lead after a single from Rogers that allowed junior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) to score.
Both Rogers and Nixon finished with a team-best three RBI's as freshman Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) and Rogers were 2-for-3 from the plate.
Perry would complete the day with a 2-0 record on the mound for Shaw. She allowed two hits, one run and walked one.
The Garnett and White will return to action Saturday, Mar. 18 versus the Trojans of VSU on Field 4 and end the day versus the Hawks of Chowan at 3 p.m. on Field 3.
Sunday, Shaw will go head-to-head with BSU at 10 a.m. (Field 1) before a battle with the Lady Panthers of VUU at noon on Field 1 to conclude the round-up.
