N. MYRTLE BEACCH, SC – The Shaw University softball team gave up three games on the final day of the 2017 Fastpitch Dream Springs Classic Friday afternoon. The Lady Bears fell twice to West Virginia State (14-8) by the scores of 7-2 and 14-6 before suffering a 10-6 setback to Roosevelt (6-4) in the nightcap.
In game one of the doubleheader between the Yellow Jackets, Shaw's two runs came off an error to allow Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) to score, following a single from Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) in the top of the sixth to also bring home Lewis. WVS scored one run each in the first, third, fourth, fifth prior to tallying three in the sixth.
Game two saw the Lady Bears (2-17) take a 3-2 lead in the opening inning. The Lady Bears led 4-3 until the top of the third when the Yellow Jackets tallied a game-high six runs before blistering to a 14-6 lead in the fifth to secure the sweep. Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Against Roosevelt in the finale, the Lady Bears trailed 5-0 early but managed to come alive in the bottom of the fifth when Shaw scored six runs thanks to hot hitting and the Lakers miscues. With 6-5 advantage heading into the sixth, Shaw would lose its lead after allowing Roosevelt to plate three runs in the top and two in the seventh. Bailey Nixon (Denison, TX) recorded three RBI's and one run.
Shaw will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 17 at the CIAA Roundup hosted by Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. The Lady Bears will face Virginia State and Elizabeth City State; game times have yet to be determined.
