NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Shaw University softball fell in a pair of games with dramatic seventh and ninth innings at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Wednesday afternoon, giving up four runs in the sixth inning in an 8-3 loss to Alderson-Broaddus before a late rally fell short in a 7-5 defeat against Ohio Valley.
Shaw (1-13) entered the sixth inning of Wednesdays first game with a deficit of 4-2 but the Battlers (3-1)went on to score four runs in the inning off of five hits. Offensively, the Lady Bears were led by Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) who tallied two RBI's in the loss. Bailey Nixon (Denison, TX) took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits, seven errors and one strikeout.
Deadlocked at 5-5 in the sixth inning of game two, both Shaw and Ohio Valley (3-6) went scoreless over the next two innings before the Scots plated two led by a double from Kyle Doelling. The Lady Bears had two runners left on base but was able to respond in the bottom of the ninth.
Masnica recorded a season-high three RBI's in the contest, in addition to a double in the bottom of the fifth. Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) accounted for the loss on the mound with two hits, two walks and one strikeout in three innings pitched.
Shaw will look to bounce back with two games on Thursday, Mar. 9 versus Malone at 1:30 p.m. and Ohio Christian at 3:30 p.m.
