RALEIGH, NC – On Tuesday afternoon, the Shaw University softball team was swept in a non-conference twinbill by St. Andrews University, 6-1 and 6-1 at Worthdale Park. With the losses, the Lady Bears slip to 1-9 overall while the Knights improve to 8-10 overall.
Game 1: Shaw 1, St. Andrews 6
SAU plated one run in the top of the third before adding two in the fourth while the Lady Bears managed to score one run in the bottom of the fifth by Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) who reached home on a double from Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI). The Knights would go on to score one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to walk away with the win.
Rogers batted 2-for-2 with one RBI to the lead the Lady Bears. Perry was 2-for-3 at the plate in the seven-inning game.
Game 2: Shaw 1, St. Andrews 6
Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) singled to center field in the fifth inning to score Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ), who reached base on a double. Ngeve's RBI provided lone score for the Lady Bears in game two, who registered six hits.
Shaw was led by Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) who was 2-for-3 at the plate in the six-inning game.
The Lady Bears will look ahead to host its annual softball challenge that will include 21 teams from various conferences on Friday, March 3 through Sunday, March 5 at two locations – Middle Creek School Park (151 Park Ave, Apex, NC 27539) and Thomas Brooks Park (9008 Green Level Church Road, Cary, NC 27519).
Shaw will face Lock Haven on Friday at 7 p.m. and Shepherd on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Apex, NC.
