RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team dropped two games to Salem International University on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears fell 3-1 in game one before suffering an 11-6 loss in game two. The loss drops Shaw to 1-5 on the year while the Tigers improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Shaw fell short in game one, SIU scored first in the third inning as the Lady Bears responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run by Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL). Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings before the Tigers punched in two runs to seal the deal.
The Lady Bears tallied two hits during the contest while the Tigers accounted for six hits.
Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) accounted for the loss with three errors, three runs, six hits and one strike out.
In game two, SIU took an early 9-0 lead over the Lady Bears after three complete innings. Shaw managed to cut the deficit in the fourth by scoring two runs and four in the fifth to pull within three points (9-6) but the Tigers would hang on for the win after scoring a run in both the sixth and seventh inning to take the sweep.
Shaw will return to action Sunday, Feb. 19 at Barton College for a non-conference doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
