RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team earned its first win on the season with a split at Meredith College on Sunday afternoon at the Meredith Softball Complex for a non-conference doubleheader. The Lady Bears and the Avenging Angels split with Meredith taking game one 19-0 and Shaw taking game two 5-1. Shaw stands 1-3 overall while Meredith also posts a 1-3 mark on the young season.

GAME 1: Shaw (0) – Meredith (19)

The Avenging Angels made quick work of the Lady Bears, scoring 19 runs, including three home runs and invoking the 10-run rule after five innings to take game one. MC tallied five runs in the top of the second and fourth before scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth.

The Lady Bears recorded just two hits and three errors as freshman Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) took the loss at the mound, allowing 11 hits, 13 runs, 10 errors and two home runs.

GAME 2: Shaw (5) – Meredith (1)

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Bears scored a season-high five runs in the bottom of the second when sophomore Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) doubled to left field to bring home sophomore Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA). Rogers would steal second before eventually stealing home for Shaw's second run.

A single from sophomore Chynna Gross (Orangeburg, FL) brought Ortiz home, following a single from senior Sheniqua Fahie (British, Virginia Islands) that allowed Gross to cross home plate. The Lady Bears last run came on a double from junior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) that led to a score for Fahie.

The Avenging Angels tallied just one run in the top of the third on a sacrifice to left field but that would be the last time MC would score as the Lady Bears stifling defense willed them to the victory.

Four Lady Bears registered an RBI on the day. Freshman Bailey Nixon (Denison, TX) took the win in the circle, allowing six hits, three strikeouts, one run and one error against 26 batters.

Shaw will host its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 18 in a doubleheader versus Salem International, beginning at 1 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
