SOFTBALL FALLS IN DOUBLEHEADER TO BLUEFIELD COLLEGE

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University softball team (2-8) suffered a 4-0 and 8-0 loss to Bluefield College on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader at Worthdale Park.

Shaw was out hit 15-3, while collecting eight errors compared to Bluefield's two on the day.

In the opening contest, neither teams could get anything going offensively until the top of the third inning when Mary Blake Avery doubled to left field advancing her teammate to third, followed by a fly out to left field that allowed Eryn Haley to score for the Lady Rams (2-5).

The Lady Rams scored again in the inning after Morgan Sawyer doubled to centerfield to bring teammate Avery to home plate, giving Bluefield the 2-0 lead over the Lady Bears.

Shaw struggled to get on base for the remainder of the contest as they allowed BC to score one more run in the fifth and seventh to take the 4-0 win. Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) took the loss at the mound. She allowed eight hits, four runs, while walking three and striking out one in seven innings pitched.

Game two, it was all Bluefield as they plated one run in the third, two in the second before adding five runs in the fifth as the Lady Bears struggled to get on base going scoreless for the contest. Perry started the game for Shaw and spent three innings in the circle allowing four hits, one run and one error. Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) came on relief of Perry and put in 2.0 innings of work, allowing three hits, seven runs, six errors and one walk.

The Lady Bears will look to recover on Friday, Mar. 4 when they host their annual Softball Challenge that features at least 22 teams from different conferences, including the PSAC, SAC, GLIAC, SIAC, PBC and MEC. Shaw will face Benedict College at 6 p.m. at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
