Lady Bears Sweep Doubleheader Against Livingstone

SALISBURY, N.C. - The Lady Bears softball team won their first CIAA games of the season Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Livingstone 10-2 and 16-7.

In the first contest, the Bears built a lead scoring five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth, building the eight-run lead that ended the contest after five innings.

Tied at two-all going into the fourth, Shaw's Cheslea Holliday started the inning with a single, followed by a double from Briana Bease which moved Holliday to third.  Morgan Jones then poked a ball over the fence, giving the Lady Bears a 5-2 lead.

With one out, Renee Holmes tripled, and Kemesha Braithewate homered, upping the Shaw advantage to 7-2.

Pitcher Daniela Archibold held the Lady Blue Bears scoreless in both the fourth and the fifth, while Holliday's home run with one on in the top of the fifth gave Shaw the eight-run win.

In the first game, Holmes, Holliday and Bease had two hits apiece, while Jones drove in four during the contest.  Braithewaite also homered in the game.  Archibold earned her first win this season with a five-inning, three-hit performance.  She walked only two while striking out five.

Archibold earned the win in the second game as well, which was even more of an offensive slugfest.  Down 4-1 after the first inning, Shaw exploded with four runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to take a lead they would never relinquish.  Leading 12-7 after five, the Lady Bears scored four in the sixth, while shutting down Livingstone to end the game on the eight-run rule after six innings.

Shaw's offensive outburst in the second game came without a home run, but the Lady Bears collected 18 hits and took advantage of four Livingstone errors to build their advantage.

Holmes, Braithewaite and Kayla Lafrades had three hits apiece for Shaw, and Lafrades drove in three runs.  Braithewaite, Holliday and Jones had two RBIs each.

With the wins, Shaw improves to 3-19 overall, 2-9 in the CIAA and 2-4 in the conference's southern division.  They return to divisional play Sunday when they continue their road trip, playing at Johnson C. Smith in a doubleheader.  First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.  The Lady Bears return home Monday when they host cross-town rival Saint Augustine's at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
