AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Shaw softball team claimed their first win of the season with a 15-7 win over Paine in six innings in the second game of a doubleheader played Thursday.
The Lady Bears took advantage of six Paine errors, but also collected 16 hits on the way to the game which ended an inning early because of the NCAA's eight-run mercy rule.
Scoring every inning, the Lady Bears had their big inning in the fourth, when they scored five runs to break the game open. Shaw took the lead in the second inning with four runs, and never let Paine take the advantage. Shaw scored two in the sixth to put them over the eight-run limit to end the game after holding Paine scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
Each Shaw batter reached base at least once in the game, and six batters had multi-hit games. Three Lady Bears had three-hit games: Shanice Anderson, Kiana King and Briana Bease. Bease and Renee Holmes scored three runs apiece. Kayla Lafrades and Daniela Archibold each drove in two runs to top Shaw.
The win improves the Shaw record to 1-15.
In the first game of the set, Shaw fell 13-1.
