Shaw Softball Opens Season 0-3

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Shaw University softball team opened their season 0-3 this past weekend at the Hampton Jordan Classic held at Claflin University.

The Lady Bears lost to Clark Atlanta 9-1 in five innings, and 6-0 to USC Aiken on Saturday, and closed out tournament play with an 8-0 loss to Benedict.

In the first game, Clark Atlanta jumped to an early 7-0 lead, but Shaw responded with a run in the top of the third when Shai Bease reached first on a fielding error.  Daniela Archibold then singled up the center, advancing Bease to second.

With two out, Renee Holmes singled, advancing both runners a base.  Jolene Arroyo then lined a single to center field, scoring Bease.

In the second game, the Lady Bears gave up only one run in the first and then held USC Aiken scoreless through five innings.  Archibold, who pitched all three contests over the weekend, walked only two and gave up only one earned run in the game.

Holmes picked up the only hit in the game for the Lady Bears.

Sunday, the Lady Bears dropped an 8-0 contest against Benedict.  Kayla Lafrades picked up Shaw's only hit in that game.

The Lady Bears next take the field when they take on Lincoln in the CIAA Roundup being hosted by the Lady Bears at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.  First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.  The Roundup continues throughout Saturday and Sunday.  Shaw also takes on Virginia Union at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Bowie State at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
