Softball Splits Doubleheader With Johnson C. Smith
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Shaw softball team split a doubleheader with homestanding Johnson C. Smith Friday afternoon, winning the first game 4-2 but losing the second 8-0. The loss prevents the Lady Bears from qualifying for the CIAA Championships next week.
With the split, Shaw is now 11-30, and finishes CIAA play 6-10.
In the first game, Shaw took the lead in the top of the third when they combined two hits and two Golden Bull errors to score two runs.
JCSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Shaw reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Chelsea Holliday led off the inning with a single, and later scored on Nikitta Burroughs' sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Lady Bears would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh and close out the game with the 4-2 victory.
The Shaw bats fell all but silent in the second game, while JCSU found their offensive firepower. The Lady Bears collected only two hits while Shaw pitchers gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs in the nightcap.
The Lady Bears close out their season Sunday when they travel to Jacksonville, FL, for a doubleheader against Edward Waters. Game time for the doubleheader is 3:00 p.m.
