SALEM, Va. - Freshman standout Mike Lagat (Eldoret, Kenya) of the Shaw University men's cross country team won the individual championship award at the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship at the Green Hill Park on Thursday afternoon. The Bears placed ninth overall (203 points) in the 8k race that consisted of 76 student-athletes from 12 institutions.
Lagat won first place after crossing the finish line with a time of 27:37 while freshman Thilo Wilke (Karlstadt, Germany) came in second for the Bears with a time of 31:47.2 for 35th overall. Freshman Ivan Artegaga (Chatham, NC) finished 46th (33:06.7) while freshman Jovan Radosavelijevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and senior Guido Margiotta (Coronel, Suarez) completed the race 59th (35:43.3) and 62nd (35:58.3), respectively.
Virginia State took home the 2017 crown after compiling a total of 39 points, followed by Virginia Union with 84 points for second place and Saint Augustine's with 103 total for third place.
Lagat will look to participate in the NCAA DII Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Lock Haven, Pa. Further details about Regionals can be found here. Thursday's event concludes the 2017 slate for the Bears cross country team.
