PETERSBURG, Va. – Freshman runner Mike Lagat (Eldoret, Kenya) of the Shaw University men's cross country team ran a time of 26:11.4 for first place in the men's 8k race at the Virginia State University Cross Country Opener on Friday, Sept. 8. The Bears finished fifth overall with an average of 32:26.5 and a total of 121 points.
The Trojans took first place after a score of 30 points (28:24.4) average while Chowan (65 points), Virginia Union (98 points) and Elizabeth City State (105 points) were all second, third, and fourth, respectively.
Also making his season debut was sophomore Thilo Wilke (Karlstadt, Germany) who placed 33rd overall with a time of 31:10.2, followed by freshman Ivan Artegaga (Chatham, NC) who completed the 8k race at 32:33.7 for 45th overall out of 93 runners.
