CARY, N.C. - The Shaw men's cross country team finished eighth at the prestigious Adidas Cross Country Challenge. Nine teams competed in the college division, with North Carolina State edging out UNC-Chapel Hill for the top spot. East Carolina finished third.
"I'm disappointed and the guys are disappointed," said Shaw head coach William Montague. "It's only the second race, so we have time to improve, but we didn't get out quickly enough today. We just don't do as well in 5k races. We're strong in the 8k courses."
Darius Berry was the top finisher for the Bears with a time of 17:17.3, good for 48th place. Michael Caldwell was the next Shaw runner to cross the finish line as he finished 59th with a time of 18:05.7. Freshman Marcus Nelson finished 61st with a time of 18:08.1.
The Bears were third out of the four CIAA teams competing in the event. Saint Augustine's and Winston-Salem State both finished ahead of Shaw, while the Bears topped Fayetteville State.
Shaw's next race is at the East Carolina Invitational Friday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m. They return to Cary on Saturday, September 29 when they take part at the HBCU Invitational.
