BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Shaw University men's tennis team earned its fourth-straight victory after coming out on top with a 5-4 road victory against Bluefield College at the BC Tennis Courts.
Shaw overcame a 2-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles play with four clutch wins in singles action to earn the win.
The victory improves the Bears to 4-3 on the year. The loss drops the Rams record to 2-6 overall. Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) and Guido Margiotta (Coronel, Suarez) produced Shaw's first point of the match with an 8-1 victory against its No. 2 doubles opponents.
The Rams pulled ahead of Shaw after compiling a 9-8 win at the No. 1 doubles, followed by an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles. The key to the Bears comeback against BC were wins at first, third, fourth and fifth singles. Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany) persevered to earn the win at the No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4 while Margiotta secured a 6-4, 6-1 margin at the No. 3 singles. Daniel AC (Kikinda, Serbia) triumphed at the No. 4 singles after taking a 6-2 win in the first set, before falling 6-0 in the second but bouncing back in the third frame for a 6-4 set win.
Gonzalez's 6-2, 6-2 battle at the No. 5 singles sealed the deal for Shaw, giving the Bears the 5-4 match.
Shaw will look to win its at Bluefield College on Wednesday, April 4 at 10 a.m.
