CHARLOTTE, NC – The Shaw University men's tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) by defeating Johnson C. Smith on the road by the score of 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts. The Bears improve to 2-3 overall.
Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany) teamed up with Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) on the top court to clinch the doubles point for the Bears with an 8-3 take down over JCSU (0-7, 0-2 CIAA). Guido Margiotta (Coronel, Suarez) and Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) also helped the Bears doubles win as they turned in an 8-1 decision at the No. 2 doubles while Daniel AC (Kikinda, Serbia) and Thomas Spada (Piracicaba, Brazil) claimed the No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Shaw continued strong play in singles action. Tran earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles, following Choque punching in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 slot. Margiotta beat his opponent, 6-1, and 6-0 at No. 3 singles while AC and Gonzalez both tallied 6-0, 6-0 wins at flight's 4 and 5, respectively. Spada would close out singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 frame at the No. 6 spot.
The Bears will continue its road skid with a highly anticipated matchup at Chowan on Friday, Mar. 31 at 3 p.m.
