BEARS TENNIS GETS FIRST WIN OF 2017 AGAINST VIRGINIA STATE, 8-1

MURFREESBORO, NC – An 8-1 victory over the Trojans of Virginia State University gave the Shaw University men's tennis team its first win of the 2017 season Sunday morning at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Tennis Roundup at the Rose Family Tennis Complex on the campus of Chowan University.

The win snaps a three-game skid for the Bears as Shaw now stands 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA, while VSU drops to 4-5 on the year and 1-2 in the league.

The Bears swept all doubles with Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia) and Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany) claiming an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles. Guido Margiotta (Coronel, Suarez) and Maurico Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico) grabbed an 8-2 decision at the No. 2 spot while Daniel AC (Kikinda, Serbia) and Thomas Spada (Piracicaba, Brazil) secured an 8-1 win at the No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the Bears followed up with five of the six singles for the win. The Trojans lone point came at the No. 1 flight in a hard fought battle between Tran and his opponent as the 5-foot-8 senior would eventually fall in three, 6-2, 6-2, 14-12.

Shaw will head to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson C. Smith University on Tuesday, Mar. 28 at 2 p.m.
