RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University men's and women's tennis teams will hit the road on Thursday, Mar. 2 to face North Greenville University for a non-conference tilt with both matches beginning at 2 p.m.


Thursday's match will be the first match of the 2017 slate for the Bears. Their match at Pfieffer was cancelled due to rain back on Feb. 18. Shaw returns six players from a season, including four whom were All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in senior Diego Choque (Tarija, Bolivia), senior Bach Tran (Leipzig, Germany), senior Guido Margiotta (Coronel, Suarez) and sophomore Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico).


The Bears finished the 2016 season as runner-up champions in the conference championship after falling to Chowan, 5-1. Shaw concluded the season with a 10-6 overall record and 6-2 mark within the league.


On the women's side, the Lady Bears (2-0) are coming off a 5-0 victory at Pfeiffer on Feb. 18. Due to rain, the match left several singles unfinished but the Lady Bears were able to take a clean sweep in doubles before taking two in singles.


As for North Greenville's men's and women's tennis teams, the Crusaders welcome Shaw with a 1-8 record on the men's side. In its last outing, North Greenville defeated University of Mount Olive by a score of 6-3 in Tigerville, SC on Saturday.


Their women's tennis dropped a 5-4 decision to University of Mount Olive as well. The Crusaders came up short in a hard fought match. North Greenville is 1-7 on the season.


Following Thursday's matches, Shaw will return to action on March 4 at N.C. Wesleyan University for a non-conference contest. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
