Shaw Men's Tennis Prepares for NCAA D-II National Tournament
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Shaw University men's tennis opens play at the NCAA National Tournament Wednesday, when they take on #6 Hawaii Pacific at 2:00 p.m. at the Top Gun Tennis Academy.
The Bears (27-2) earned their spot in the National Tournament - which features 16 teams that have advanced through eight regional tournaments - with a 5-4 defeat of Bloomsburg on April 30. In that match, they overcame a 3-0 deficit after dropping all three doubles matches.
All six members of the Shaw team - Artur Latypov, Gabriel Nicotra, Charles Silva, Daniel Vasquez, Juan Sanchez and Andre Monti - earned All-CIAA honors after the Bears swept through conference play undefeated.
The Sea Warriors are led by Petr Michnev, raned eighth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Georgi Yardanov is 37th in the nation in the same rankings. Patric Guenther and Michnev are the fourth-ranked doubles team in the nation. Over all, the team is 14-4 and this is the sixth time they have advanced to the round of 16.
