Men's Tennis Goes 1-2 On The Weekend
(Raleigh, NC) – March 14 – The Shaw men's tennis team dropped matches to Bluefield State and Charleston – both of the WVIAC - on Saturday, but recovered Sunday to defeat Norfolk State 6-3. Shaw lost Saturday's matches, part of the CIAA-WVIAC Crossover, by identical 5-4 scores. In both instances, the Bears won only one doubles match and three singles matches.
Against D-I Norfolk State, the Bears won two doubles matches (one by default) and four singles matches (one by default) for the 6-3 tally. Norfolk State won one singles match by default when Shaw's Antoine Jacobs had to retire with an injury in the first set. Jacobs was leading 5-4 at the time.
Kalada Kienka continued his season-long winning streak by sweeping all three of his singles matches over the weekend. He dropped a total of only four games in the three contests. Combined with doubles partner Milos Stankovic, Kalada was also undefeated in his three doubles matches.
Stankovic lost only one singles match on the weekend, in three sets, to Bluefield State's Shikhar Kapur 4-6, 6-3, 2-6. He has dropped only two singles matches on the season.
Medhi Ben-Cheikh (right) won all three of his singles matches over the weekend, and brings his season record to 9-1.
The win against Norfolk State balances the Bears record at 5-5 on the season. They next travel to Hampton –also of Division I – on Tuesday. They return home Thursday, March 25 to face North Greenville University at 2:00 p.m. All Shaw home tennis matches are played at Biltmore Hill Park at 2615 Fitzgerald Drive in Raleigh.
