PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Shaw University men's soccer program earned their second win on the 2017 season with an 8-0 shut out over Carlow University Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Bears now stand 2-3-1 overall while Carlow falls to 0-5-1.
In the first two minutes of the contest, Shaw took a 1-0 lead over the Celtics off a goal from junior Thilo Wilke (Karlstadt, Germany). Wilke would give the Bears a two-goal cushion in the 27th minute assisted by freshman Thiago Sooma (). The Bears closed out the first half with another goal at the 40' thanks to sophomore Zola Mafolo Rodriguez (South London, England) from sophomore Nicholas Madrid (Apex, NC).
Shaw amassed a program record five goals in the second half as the Bears would not relent on the lead. For the contest, Shaw outshot their opponents 16-5 including a 11-2 advantage for shot-on-goals.
Both Wilkes' and sophomore Lane Vidaurri (Forth Worth, TX) recorded two goals apiece offensively, while freshman Theo Newton, (London, England), sophomore Enrico Baldon (Sao Paulo, Brazil), sophomore Fernando Lisboa (Piracicaba, Brazil) and Mafolo Rodriguez all contributed one goal each.
Defensively, freshman Santiago Farre (Barcelona, Spain) recorded two saves.
Shaw will return to action Friday, Sept. 22 for a contest at UC Clermont College in Batavia, OH. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
