MEN’S BASKETBALL TO OPEN 2018-19 WITH HOOPS CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND

RALEIGH, N.C.   The Shaw University men's basketball team in conjunction with the Bread for Life of America, Inc. will host the 2018-19 Shaw Men's Basketball Classic on Saturday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 11 in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium featuring Saint Augustine's University, Mansfield University and East Stroudsburg University.

The Classic schedule will start with SAU taking on the Warriors of ESU at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Bears and Mountaineers of MU on at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Falcons and Mountaineers will go head-to-head at 2 p.m. and then Shaw will square off with the Warriors at 4 p.m. to conclude the Classic.

Under the leadership of Joel Hopkins in his sixth season, the Bears return four players from last year's team that went 20-9 overall and won its second consecutive division title. Shaw was predicted to finish second overall in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and first in the Southern Division. Out of those four returners, three were starters including All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Preseason Selectee junior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) who averaged 13.6 ppg, shooting over 40-percent from the 3-point line and registering 110 3-pointers for the year – ranking fifth in Division II.

Additionally, the Bears will have 10 newcomers that features junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) who was named First-Team All-PSAC, averaging 23.4 ppg during 2017-18 and junior Davon Dillard (Harvey, IL), a transfer from Oklahoma State who posted 5.7 ppg and 3.2 rebounds, known for his explosive athletic ability and 3-point shooting.

ESU concluded 2017-18 with a 27-6 season, including its third PSAC Championship title and first-ever Atlantic Region title and DII Elite Eight appearance. The Warriors return half of their 10-man rotation from last season, including Jakwan Jones who earned second team All-PSAC honors, averaging 9.6 points, 5.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds per outing.

As for the Mansfield Mountaineers, MU was 7-19 last year, also a member of the PSAC. The Mountaineers have nine new players that features Division I transfer Ryan Bernstein. MU was projected to finish seventh in the PSAC East.

Saint Augustine's, member of the CIAA will begin its season at the Classic, coming off a 14-15 mark last year led by MarQus Johnson. SAU was predicted to finish sixth in the South and ninth overall in the league led by Tyre Gathright who was named to the CIAA All-Preseason Team, averaging 15.2 ppg a season ago. The Falcons return five players from 2017-18.
