CIAA ANNOUNCES 2018 ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS, TWO BEARS SELECTED FIRST-TEAM ALL-CIAA

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), with its Men's and Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association, announced the 2018 Men's & Women's All-CIAA First Team and All-Rookie honorees. Shaw University had two players earn the accolade in senior guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) and senior forward Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA).

The outstanding student-athletes were formally recognized today during the annual Tip-Off Awards Luncheon at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Stephens-Bell has been exceptional for the men's basketball program this year. In his senior campaign, the 6-foot-2 guard led the Bears in scoring with an average of 18.7 ppg (2nd in CIAA), 5.0 assists (3rd in CIAA), 5.9 rebounds (10th in CIAA) and 1.9 steals (3rd in CIAA). His numbers increased tremendously from a season ago as Stephens-Bell has scored in double figures 27 times, including a career-high 36 points against Lock Haven (Nov. 11).

The Jacksonville, Fla., native has had two games with a career-high nine assists and two games with a career-high 13 rebounds and is a two-time CIAA Player of the Week honoree.

In his first season as a Shaw Bear, Goodman was chosen CIAA Newcomer of the week five times and CIAA Player of the Week once during the 2017-18 season. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged the Bears second-best in scoring (18.1 ppg) which was third in the CIAA, he led Shaw in rebounds (9.6 rpg) and field goal percentage (57.4) which also ranked second and third amongst the conference.

Goodman, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., registered 11 double-doubles during the regular season, including 14 games with at least 10 rebounds and 23 games in double digits. His best game of the 2017-18 campaign was a 36-point performance to go along with 15 rebounds against Washington Adventist.

The Bears finished the regular season with a 20-8 record (12-4 in the CIAA) and crowned the Southern Division co-champion along with Johnson C. Smith. The accolade is head coach Joel Hopkins' second division title in three season since his return at the helm.

Shaw will play the winner of Virginia Union and Winston-Salem State on Thursday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Spectrum Center.
