CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) released the official 73rd Men's Basketball Tournament bracket. The 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held from Tuesday, February 27 – Saturday, March 3 at both the Bojangles Coliseum and the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. Men's competition is scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
With the conclusion of regular season competition, the 2018 Men's Basketball Tournament pairings and bracket have been announced by the CIAA Basketball Tournament Committee. Pairings are based on the highest divisional winning percentage. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker rule begins with head-to-head competition results followed by head-to-head point differential. If a tie situation remains, the highest conference winning percentage will be utilized. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds of each division receive a first round bye.
The Shaw Bears (20-8 overall, 12-4 CIAA) clinched the number two seed in the Southern Division after posting an 8-2 stand against division opponents this season. Shaw's 78-75 victory over Johnson C. Smith Saturday, marked a tie between the Bears and Golden Bulls at 8-2 in the division standings. The teams split in head-to-head competition, but JCSU's 93-83 (+10) victory margin surpassed Shaw's 78-75 margin which would give the Bears the No. 2 seed overall in the South. The Bears share the division title with Johnson C. Smith and will wait for the winner of No. 6 seed of the South, Winston-Salem State versus No. 3 seed of the North, Virginia Union on Thursday, Feb. 29 at the Spectrum Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Should Shaw advance, the Bears would participate in the semifinals, also at 7 p.m., followed by the Championship game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
