RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's and women's basketball will visit Johnson C. Smith University Saturday, Feb. 24 for their last regular season doubleheader of the 2017-18 slate with the women's game scheduled for 2 p.m. and the men's game at approximately 4 p.m. in BrayBoy Gymnasium.
Saturday's doubleheader at Johnson C. Smith will offer live audio on with Donal Ware providing play-by-play commentary. The women's game will be offered on here while the men's game can be heard on WSHA 88.9 FM.
The Bears (19-8, 11-4 CIAA, 7-2 South) will battle for first place with the Golden Bulls (18-9, 11-4 CIAA, 8-1 South) who defeated Shaw on their home court by the scored 93-83 on Feb. 3. Shaw has won their last five games entering Saturday's game but hold a 6-5 record on the road this season.
As for JCSU, they are 10-5 at home this season. Most of their offense comes from Robert Davis who averages 22.0 ppg (1st in CIAA) while the Bears offense comes from senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) who posts 18.8 ppg (2nd in CIAA) and senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) at 18.5 ppg (3rd in CIAA) for Shaw.
In order for Shaw to reclaim the Southern Division title, the Bears would have to defeat JCSU by 11 points today.
The Lady Bears (6-21, 3-12 CIAA, 2-7 South) enters Saturday's game coming off a 66-56 loss to Fayetteville State Wednesday while the Golden Bulls of JCSU (17-9, 9-6 CIAA, 6-3) throttled Winston-Salem State, 76-60 in their last outing. Shaw's offense is led by junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA), averaging 13.1 ppg while the JSCU is anchored by Jasmine Carter (12.9 ppg).
This will be the second meeting between both teams this season. Shaw suffered a 78-60 decision to JCSU back on Feb. 3 in Spaulding.
Following Saturday's clash, both the men's and women's basketball team will await the seeding for the 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament held in Charlotte, NC at both the Bojangles Coliseum and the Spectrum Center beginning on Feb. 27 through Mar. 3.
