WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team pulled out a gritty, 79-69, victory at Winston-Salem State University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest on Saturday afternoon in C.E. Gaines Center. The Bears (16-8, 9-4 CIAA) are now in second place in the South while the Rams (4-18, 2-11 CIAA) are sixth at 0-7 within the division standings.
The Bears shot 50-percent (26-52) from the floor, including 6-of-16 from the 3-point line (37.5-percent) and nailed 21-for-29 (72.4-percent) from the charity stripe.
Senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) turned in a 23-point performance and eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of action due to early on foul trouble. Senior Krishaun Myers (Pompano Beach, FL) scored 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from down town and four steals off the bench while senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) chipped in 15 points, six assist and five rebounds in the win.
In a game that featured eight ties and 13 lead changes, it was the Bears who made the big plays down the stretch to pull off their fifth division win of the season.
The Rams took a 44-43 edge at halftime as the Bears rallied from a seven-point deficit to take the lead on 8-3 spurt but William Crandell hit a layup for WSSU that would send them into the locker room with one-point edge.
The Bears trailed by seven again at the 6:26 mark of the second half before Goodman hit four-straight free-throws to pull Shaw within 65-62. From there, the Bears scored eight unanswered points to go ahead 70-65 with 2:45 left to play. A free-throw shot from Crandell cut the Rams deficit to four but that would be the closest WSSU would get the remainder of the way as Shaw was able to secure the win thanks to 9-3 run.
The Rams shot 25-of-54 from the field (46.3-percent) led by Crandell who scored 18 points and six rebounds. Julius Barnes and James Rucker, II tallied 11 points apiece while Derrick Farquharson added 10 points.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 with a home contest versus Washington Adventist for Greek Night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
