FREE-THROWS PROPEL THE BEARS TO WIN IN OVERTIME AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED VIRGINIA STATE, 50-47

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team hit clutched free-throws down the stretch to propel the Bears to a 50-47 victory over nationally-ranked Virginia State University Wednesday night inside a packed C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division contest.

Senior guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) scored a game-high 14 points, grabbing four rebounds, one assist and one steal while senior forward Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) added 13 points and six rebounds for the Bears who improve to 14-7 overall and 7-3 in the CIAA.

The first half featured three ties and two lead changes but the Bears maneuvered a 10-0 run beginning at the 7:19 mark in route to a 28-19 lead at halftime after VSU cut the deficit on two free-throws.

VSU (17-3, 7-3 CIAA) trimmed Shaw's lead to one on a 12-4 spread but a layup from senior guard Krishaun Myers (Pompano Beach, FL) put the Bears ahead 34-31 with 9:47 left in the second half. After four more ties and 1:37 left in regulation, a missed 3-pointer by Shaw, following a missed 3-pointer by the Trojans led to both teams going into an extra five minutes' play.

In overtime, the Bears took the first lead on two free-throws from senior guard Khaliq Williams (Jacksonville, FL) but Waymond Wright hit a jumper to knot the game at 46-even with 3:24 left to play. VSU took a 47-46 edge after a freebie but Williams responded with a jumper to give Shaw the lead again.

The Trojans missed a jumper on the ensuing possession which led to defensive rebound by Stephens-Bell, forcing VSU to foul. Stephens-Bell would sink them both, securing the win over No. 3 VSU as the Trojans 3-point attempt was no good as time expired.

Andrew Corum scored a team-best nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss for VSU. Richard Granberry finished with 10 rebounds.

The Bears will stay at home and host Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday, Feb. 3 for Think Pink. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Spaulding.
