RALEIGH, N.C. – A balanced, high scoring effort for the Shaw University men's basketball team led the Bears to a 93-82 victory over Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) division foe Winston-Salem State University on Saturday afternoon inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears (12-6, 5-2 CIAA, 2-0 South) notched 17 assists on 31 made field goals and made 21 free throws. Shaw hit 10-of-18 3-pointers, marking the third game this season the squad has hit double-digits in made three-point field goals.
Sophomore guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) led the Bears in scoring for the third time this season. He scored 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from long distance Senior forward Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) recorded his ninth double-double of the year with 20 points and 12 rebounds and senior guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) chipped in 17 points seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Cameron Golden, Sr. (Memphis, TN) scored 12 points and dished out five assist, while senior guard Krishaun Myers and sophomore center Lamous Brown (Chicago, IL) both finished with 10 points apiece. Brown grabbed four rebounds and three blocks while Myers collected three rebounds in the win.
A back-and-forth first half that featured four ties and four lead changes early on saw Shaw take a 43-35 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kelsie led all scorers with 15 points in the opening half to spearhead the Bears offensive attack. Shaw recorded 11 assists on 17 made field goals.
The Bears never trailed in the second half. Their key run came at the 11:08 mark sparked by a slam from Brown, which led to a 20-14 scoring frame for Shaw that put them up 82-71 with 5:41 remaining in regulation.
The Rams cut the deficit to nine on two free-throws from Julius Barnes but the Bears hit three-straight freebies to go ahead 12 as the Bears would not let relent on their lead for the victory.
Barnes led the Rams (4-13, 2-6 CIAA, 0-2 South) in scoring with 21 points and four assist, following William Crandell scored 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
