CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference (CIAA) announced the winners of the leagues weekly men's basketball honors following week 7 of the 2017-18 men's basketball season. Shaw University had three; including head coach Joel Hopkins take home the weekly honors this week.
Coach Hopkins was named Week 7 CIAA Men's Basketball Coach of the Week after guiding the Bears to an 8-4 overall record and 2-0 in the CIAA. Shaw defeated Barton College 110-89 last Saturday for their sixth-straight victory under Hopkins. This is his first honor of the 2017-18 season.
Sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) was named CIAA Player of the Week after scoring a new career-high 39 points, including 27 in the second half and program record (12) 3-pointers to lead the Shaw University men's basketball team to 110-89 win over Barton College Saturday. His efforts was the third time he scored 30 or more points this season. This is his first time in his career he has received the award.
No stranger to the weekly honors is senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) who received Newcomer of the Week after reporting his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the Bears victory over Barton. He connected 7-of-10 shots from the floor for 70% shooting. This is Goodman's second time receiving the accolade this season.
Shaw will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Bears begin its five-game road swing and conference cross-division action at Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
