KELSIE LIGHTS UP SECOND HALF AS SHAW TOPS BARTON FOR SIXTH-STRAIGHT WIN

RALEIGH, N.C. Sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) scored a new career-high 39 points, including 27 in the second half and a program record 12 3-pointers to lead the Shaw University men's basketball team to 110-89 win over Barton College Saturday afternoon inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The win gave the Bears its sixth-straight as Shaw closes out the 2017 portion of the season 8-4 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 7-5 on the season.

Both teams started out the contest neck-and-neck with one another, including 12 lead changes and four ties but in the last 2:00 of the first half, Shaw went on a 12-2 run led by three 3-pointers from Kelsie that put the Bears ahead 46-36 at the break.

The second half would be all Shaw as the Bears opened the stanza with a 20-8 scoring margin in the first 7:00 of play. The Bulldogs tried to close the gap, pulling within 15 (66-51) at the 12:00 mark but the Bears exploded to their largest lead of the evening at 27 points thanks to explosive shooting from Kelsie who scored eight 3-pointers in a span of eight minutes.

Shaw's 62.2-percent shooting from the floor in the second half alone proved to be too much for Barton to handle as the Bears cruised to 110-89 victory. Shaw connected 41-of-72 shots (57-percent) from the field, 13-of-23 shooting (57 -percent) from long distance and nailed 15-of-23 shots (65-percent) at the free-throw line.

Senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) turned in all-around performance with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while senior Krishaun Myers (Pompano Beach, FL) chipped in 18 points off the bench and senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) reported his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs were led by Jake Kakar who finished with 25 points, following Isaiah Buck-Lowman who added 19 points and six rebounds. Michael Boykin would chip in 12 points to round out the double figure scoring for Barton.

Shaw will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Bears begin its five-game road swing and conference cross-division action at Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
