RALEIGH, N.C. – Former Shaw University men's basketball player and Raleigh native Joshua Cassady signed a professional contract with E.S.S. (Etoile Sportive Du Sahel) in North Africa Sunday, Dec. 24. The E.S.S. is one of 14 teams in the Tunisian Division I Basketball League which is the highest tier professional basketball league in Tunisia.
Cassady, a 6-foot-9 center was a member of the Bears basketball team for two seasons, including the 2016-17 season where he averaged 9.0 points and led the team in rebounds at 6.4 rebounds a night. He appeared in 27 games and started 26 during his senior season, registering 12 games in double digit scoring and helped the Bears to a division title for the first time in five years.
His best game came against Virginia Union University on Dec. 10, 2016 where he hauled in a career-high 23 points, 18 rebounds and 12 blocks for the Bear (his first-ever career triple-double). After that performance, Cassady was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Player of the Week.
In addition, Cassady was named First-Team All-CIAA.
Currently, E.S.S. is 5-1 on the season.
Cassady is expected to finish his degree at Shaw in 2018.
