BEARS RIDE HOT FIRST-HALF SHOOTING TO 105-85 WIN OVER ELIZABETH CITY STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University men's basketball team shot a blistering 63.9 percent in the first half to come away with a 105-85 triumph over Elizabeth City State University on Thursday night. The Bears (6-4, 2-0 CIAA) earned their fourth win in a row and second-consecutive win inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Vikings dip to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Seniors DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) and Krishaun Myers were superb, netting 24 and 23 points respectively and teaming up for nine of the Bears 15 assists.

Senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) hauled in 19 points and eight rebounds while sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) finished with 17 points, including five of Shaw's seven 3-pointers.

The Vikings led twice early in the game, but a strong shooting night (56.3 percent) for the Bears put distance from ECSU. Shaw put together a 24-5 scoring margin over a span of seven minutes to lead 36-19 with 6:35 left in the first half. The Vikings trimmed at the deficit to pull within 12 but the Bears shifted in second gear to go up by 22 – their largest lead of the night capped by a 3-pointer from Kelsie.

Shaw led 57-37 at halftime with Stephens-Bell and Myers leading the way with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Bears took their foot off the pedal in the second half as the Vikings wound up pulling within single digits six times before Shaw used a 7-0 to go up 81-66 at the 8:52 mark. The Bears maintained at least a 13-point cushion for the remainder of the way, including a 10-4 spread that gave Shaw the 20-point victory.

Shaw scored 56 of their 105 points in the paint, while scoring 30 off of the Vikings 19 turnovers. The Bears held a 12-2 advantage in fast breaks and a 34-30 frame from the bench.

John Maynor led the efforts for ECSU with 22 points while Zaccheus Hobbs added 17, Shyheid Petteway with 11 and Aujameq Daniels with 10 points.

Shaw will return to action Sunday, Dec. 17 when they travel to Washington Adventist for a non-conference tilt scheduled for 1 p.m. in Tacoma, Md.
