RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University men's basketball team fell to Morehouse College 80-77 inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday night on the final day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Conference Challenge. With the loss, Shaw is now 2-3 on the year and Morehouse improves to 4-0 on the season.
Senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) and sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) led Shaw in double figures with 23 points apiece. Senior Khaliq Williams (Jacksonville, FL) recorded 16 points and seven rebounds.
In a back-and-forth game with just two ties in the second half, the Bears attempted a furious comeback attempt down three with 1:16 remaining. Kelsie iced two free throws to bring Shaw within one point.
After a missed layup from the Maroon Tigers, an offensive rebound from Martravious Little led to a jumper from Tyrius Walker to put MHC up by three again with 11 seconds left in regulation which ultimately sealed the win for the visiting Maroon Tigers.
MHC went 33-for-73 from the field and 10-for-22 from the free throw line, and like Shaw placed three players in double digits scoring. Omar Alston led the Maroon Tigers with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
The Bears finished the contest, shooting 37 percent from the floor (23-of-61) and 25-for-29 at the free throw line for 86 percent. Shaw was outrebounded 52-34 and outscored 17-5 in second chances and 33-9 from their bench players.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Francis Marion University. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
