RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) of the Shaw University men's basketball team scored 23 points to lead the Bears to a 93-85 win over the Salem University Tigers in their home opener Tuesday night inside a packed C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Goodman connected 10-of-15 from the field, while grabbing five rebounds, three steals and one assists. Senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) had 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds while sophomore Hari Hall (Jacksonville, FL) scored 13 points, senior Khaliq Williams (Jacksonville, FL) added 12 points and senior Cameron Golden, Sr. (Memphis, TN) chipped in 10 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Bears second-straight win.
Shaw (2-1) shot 56-percent from the field in the second half and 56-percent in the game. The Bears also recorded a season-high for free throws attempted (20) and made (14).
The Bears raced out to a 6-0 lead to start the game led by four points from Goodman. Shaw held onto its lead the entire half including their largest lead of the game at 18 points (47-29) thanks to a 11-2 run with 2:34 on the game clock.
The Tigers used a 7-3 advantage to close the deficit to 14 points (50-36) at halftime. The Bears shot 55-percent from the floor while holding Salem to just 35-percent in field goal range. Goodman led all scorers at the break with 15 points.
With a double-digit lead in the second frame, Shaw comfortably held onto their lead throughout the stanza, including a 14-point advantage twice but the Tigers did not fend off easy as SIU produced a 14-5 spurt to pull within four points with 36 seconds remaining. The Bears then used the clock and nailed the last 4-of-6 free throws to secure the win.
Malik Toppin led SIU (1-1) in scoring with 29 points and 10 rebounds, following Jesse Pistokache with 23 points while Jarius Farrow and Jordan Robinson finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Shaw will return to action on Friday, Nov. 17 for the 2017 CIAA/SIAC Challenge hosted by the Bears in C.C.
