BEARS FALL 65-53 TO NO. 8 SHIPPENSBURG IN SEASON OPENER

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -  The Shaw University men's basketball team battled No. 8 Shippensburg University Friday night day one of the 2017 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic to open up their 2017-18 schedule but the Bears were unable to begin the season with a victory as Shaw ran out of gas, falling 65-53 at Shippensburg.

Seniors DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) and Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) both recorded 14 points apiece to lead Shaw in scoring. Bell added a game-high 13 rebounds and three assists while Goodman grabbed 11 boards and one assist. Senior Cameron Golden, Sr. (Memphis, TN) chipped in 11 points.

Shaw (0-1) shot 43-percent (24-56) from the floor, connecting just 1-of-13 from the three-point line while hitting 4-of-9 from the foul line on the night.

In the opening, the Bears raced out to a 6-0 run before the Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with a jumper from Dustin Sleva. Shaw controlled most of the half until Shippensburg (1-0) took their first lead of the night on a three-pointer from Sleva with 8:51 left in the first half.

After three ties, the Raiders made a run sparked by a three-pointer from Justin McCarthur which led to a five-point deficit for Shaw heading into intermission. At the half, the Bears shot better than the Raiders with a shooting percentage of 48-percent but only went to the free-throw line once compared to Shippensburg's eight.

The Bears trailed by six points after three minutes of action in the second half before scoring five to pull within one with 13:37 left. Quick shots from Shaw and second chance opportunities for the Raiders saw the Bears trail by as many as 10 points at the 6:08 mark.

Shaw cut the Raiders lead to seven but that would be the closest they would get the remainder of the way as Shippensburg scored the game's last four points for the win.

The Raiders had four players chart double figures in scoring led by McCarthur who finished with a game-high 17 points while Sleva finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Antonio Kellem and Clay Conner contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Shaw will return to action Saturday, Nov 11 versus Lock Haven at 3 p.m. to conclude the 2017 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic.
